When Can Magnesium Be Dangerous?
Although magnesium is considered one of the safer supplements, it is not suitable for everyone. People with chronic kidney disease need to be especially cautious. If the kidneys are not functioning properly, the body may not be able to eliminate excess magnesium efficiently, causing its concentration to gradually increase. That is why people with kidney disease should take any supplements only after consulting a doctor.
It is also important to know that magnesium can affect the absorption of certain medications. This applies, in particular, to tetracycline antibiotics (such as doxycycline and tetracycline), fluoroquinolones (such as ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin), medications used to treat osteoporosis—bisphosphonates (such as alendronate, risedronate, and ibandronate)—and thyroid hormone medications such as levothyroxine. If you take any of these medications, it is recommended to take magnesium separately, leaving an interval of at least 2–4 hours between them to avoid reducing their absorption.
And one more point that is often overlooked. If you develop diarrhea after starting magnesium, it does not necessarily mean that the supplement is not right for you. Sometimes, simply switching to a different form of magnesium or reducing the dose is enough.
